Who is Babette Berg?

I received a prompt that Babette Berg had posted a comment on my site...but there is no comment, and no sign of Babette Berg? Has she fallen into the rabbit hole? Gary Kent

Stricken and the NY Times

An edited version of my piece in Stricken was published today in the New York Times, Style Section, Modern Love column, thanks to Katherine Tanney! Hope maybe some of you will have a look (February 15 Modern Love).

Thinking about grief and fear

Right now both of my daughters are about to give birth, and the anxiety and risk surrounding birth are very real . I really freaked out for a few hours last night when I learned that one baby is transverse and the other was breach, within a week of due date. The breach baby has since been turned, and I rationally am not afraid about birth by c section - but I was scared last night, irrationally. My worst thing happened once, when my daughters' daddy died. Nothing worse can happen to me - but… Continue

Last Week's Reading

It was scary and exciting to read the exerpt from my essay last Wednesday night - my first author event. I was amazed by how fast five minutes goes, how much I needed to boil my piece down. I was touched by the content and mood of other contributor's pieces and the universiality of loss. I felt supported by the presence of friends and family and the size and warmth of the audience. I'm glad we still have our local independent book store, Book People, to host events like this. I'm nostalgic for… Continue

Remember Who You Are

After caring to dying people for over 17 years now, I have come to the conclusion that people are physically dying and awakening at the same time. We spend a great deal of our time defining ourselves in this work and making our way through it through the titles we obtain along the way such as minister, chaplain, counselor, etc... Much attention is placed on what we are. Such actions lead us away from the place we often will attempt to guide other's to in their dying after long years of… Continue

A review of Stricken: The 5,000 Stages of Grief by The Compulsive Reader book review site: "Stricken is filled with honest and heartfelt stories from a collection of very good, mostly Texas-based writers who possess the life experience and courage to share their stories with others. The next time someone I care about is in need of comfort and solace in the face of loss, I'll be certain to pass on this worthy and life-affirming book."

Advance Praise for Stricken: The 5,000 Stages of Grief

“The final essay in Stricken gives advice on what to say to someone who has lost a loved one. The best advice, though, might be to simply give them a copy of this exquisite collection. There could be no finer companions in grief than the two dozen writers who offer their own experiences in essays that are luminously insightful, devastatingly understated, idiosyncratically sublime, and fierce and funny in their honesty.”
- Sarah Bird, author of How Perfect Is That

“From an array of diverse authors comes an essay collection with power and weight: Stricken is both heartbreaking and hopeful. Delving into personal stories of sadness and renewal, I came away from this collection changed. Stricken is a book that makes you feel less alone in the world.”
- Amanda Eyre Ward, author of Forgive Me and How to Be Lost

“These beautifully crafted essays offer a heartrending, revealing, and sometimes even hilarious glimpse into dying, death, and getting on with our lives.”
- Victoria Zackheim, author of The Bone Weaver, editor of The Other Woman and For Keeps

"Stricken is a remarkable anthology filled with writing that pierces your heart with its honesty and courage. These essays filled with hard earned wisdom are not only inspiring, but also page turners."
- Barbara Abercrombie, author of Courage & Craft and Writing Out the Storm, writing instructor at UCLA Extension

“These essays grip our hearts and remind us that death often does its most painful work on the living. For anyone who has ever suffered through loss and was brave enough to find the miracles in it. Perfect material for crying in public.”
- Pamela Ribon, television writer for "Samantha Who?" and author of Why Moms Are Weird
